We are well into detoxing our pets with a holistic wellness ‘deep dive’. Let’s focus today on how toxins enter the body, toxin absorption.

Hippocrates stated long ago – “All disease and health begins in the gut”.

If your pet’s digestive system is inflamed or otherwise compromised, unwanted substances including toxins “leak” into the bloodstream and cause inflammation, chronic diseases and even organ failure (kidneys!). On top of that, toxins reduce the ability of the gut to absorb nutrients, to digest well and toxins negatively influence our pet’s immune system.

Holistic 4-week “gut detox” plan for my pets at home:
Week One – daily an appropriate amount of activated charcoal – either as powder, in capsule or tablet form, once a day between (not with) meals.
Dosage: 1 tablet or capsule for large dogs, ½ for medium size dogs and ¼ – 1/8 for small pets like toy breeds and cats.
——
Week Two – daily zeolite or bentonite powder. Once a day either with a meal or before bedtime with water or yogurt.
Dosage: ¼ of human dosage as per product recommendation
——
Week ThreeSpirulina or Chlorella or Bluegreen algae– every 2 – 3 days. These chlorophyll-rich detoxing substances “entice” toxins to leave your pet’s fat cells.
For overweight pets with “plum fat cells” there may be a lot to detox – so go slowly to ease the burden on liver and kidneys.
Observe your pet well. If high levels of toxins are released from fat cells and are flushed into the blood stream, your pet may experience nausea, vertigo and headaches and / or skin rashes. If this happens stop and restart with half dosage as soon as your pet seems well again.
Dosage to begin with: ¼ human dosage as per product recommendation
——
Week Four – continue with Spirulina, Chlorella or Bluegreen algae. This week’s plan is to give this supplement daily – but only if your pet is free of rashes, eye, ear and vaginal or prepuce discharge and acts lively and has good appetite.
Dosage: Healthy pets receive daily one tablet/capsule for 7 days.

Aside from detoxing the gut, it’s a good idea to support gut health with probiotics and digestive enzymes.
Give your pet a healthy variety of gut bacteria and digestive enzymes to minimise toxin resorption. Proper digestion of food enhances nutrient absorption.

This 4 week detox plan is one kind of “digestive reset” to benefit your pet’s overall health and wellbeing for the next 4 to 12 months. Symptoms such as skin problems, ear and eye discharge, inappetence or varying appetite (“picky eater”), digestive upsets with soft or slimy stools or vomiting (bile or food) are indicators for toxin build up in your pet’s body and a call to action for another 4-week gut detox course.
