As the heat rises these last few weeks, we can see that not all people and definitely not all pets handle it the same way.

Cats are usually pretty heat-tolerant — they’re natural sun-lovers and tend to stay comfortable even in warm weather. As long as they enjoy wet (canned) or fresh foods with higher water content, cats will actually be happy with hot weather.

Dogs, on the other hand, are a different story. Many struggle with high temperatures, and for short-snouted breeds like Frenchies and Shi Tzus extreme heat can even be life-threatening.

What can we do to help our dog stay cool,
comfortable, and safe during a heat wave?

Fans, air conditioning, cooling mats, and ice packs all play a part — but let’s not stop there.
Let’s think holistically.

Support cooling from ‘inside out’ with natural, internal “coolants” that help regulate your dog’s body temperature and ease heat stress.

Here are simple, holistic tips to help our dog stay healthy and happy during extremely hot weather as we are currently experiencing here in Malaysia.

🌿 Holistic Cooling from the Inside Out: Safe Summer Support for Your Pet

When it comes to beating the heat, there’s more to keeping your pet cool than fans and frozen treats. Holistic solutions, especially those rooted in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), offer powerful ways to support your dog or cat’s ability to stay cool from the inside out — but only if used wisely.

🌱 Chinese Herbal Formulas: Powerful but Not One-Size-Fits-All

TCVM uses herbal mixtures known for their cooling properties — many of which are bitter in nature, and specifically designed to reduce internal heat in the body. These formulas can be highly effective, but they must be used with care.

✅ Best for “Yang-type” pets – typically younger, energetic dogs with signs of excess heat.
⚠️ Not ideal for older or “Yin-deficient” pets – these animals may experience increased joint stiffness or even become unwell with the wrong cooling herbs.

Important: These herbal remedies should only be prescribed by a certified TCVM veterinary practitioner who understands your pet’s unique constitution.

🥥 Nature’s Cooling Drink: Coconut Water

Looking for a natural, safe, and delicious cooling drink?
• Fresh young coconut water is a fantastic option. It’s:
• Naturally hydrating and full of electrolytes
• Rich in trace minerals lost during heat and heavy panting
• Amazingly compatible with the body’s fluids (in fact, it has even been used in IV solutions in emergencies!)

Serve it fresh, unsweetened, and in moderation — your pup may love it as much as you do.

⚠️ What About Barley Water?
Yes, barley water is considered cooling in TCVM — but be cautious. Since barley is a grain, it may trigger food sensitivities or skin flareups, especially in dogs prone to allergies. Monitor your pet closely if you choose to try it.

🥒 Cooling Foods That Dogs Can Enjoy
Add some naturally cooling foods into your dog’s summer menu (where appropriate):
• Watermelon sliced or as a frozen “puppocino”
• Cucumber (refreshing and hydrating)
• White radish (daikon) and bitter melon – great for veggie-loving dogs in small quantities
These can be offered as treats or mixed into food, depending on your dog’s preferences and diet.

You know well, your pet is unique. What cools one furkid down may not work for another. When in doubt, consult a holistic vet or certified TCVM practitioner before introducing new herbs or foods — especially if your pet has chronic health issues or is a senior.

Let’s stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy the summer with our furry family! ☀️🐾
