As pet “pawrents,” it’s only natural that we want to include our furkids
—sharing special treats and creating new memories.
But while it’s tempting to share special ‘goodies’ with our furry companions,
they can lead to upset tummies, itchy skin, ear troubles, or even tearing.
We’ve all been there…
the intention of creating joyful memories backfires
when we end up with a miserable pet on our hands!

Here’s how to avoid skin and tummy troubles while celebrating this festive season, including Christmas, New Year’s, Chinese New Year,
and even Valentine’s Day
1. Kibble Diets: Know What Your Pet’s Stomach Can Handle
If your pet is on a 100% kibble diet (we hope not, but we know it happens), their stomach acid production might not be up to the task of digesting sudden, protein-rich treats. Kibble-fed dogs benefit from treats made with easily digestible carbs like potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, or even
beans and peas. These options are gentle on their stomachs and
won’t disrupt their digestion.
For cats, the challenge is a little simpler. Cats are often addicted to the taste and crunch of kibble, just like humans can be addicted to processed foods. If your cat is used to kibble, stick to familiar treats or meals they already enjoy. Offering a new protein or type of treat could throw their stomach off balance.
2. Fresh Food Diets: Stick to What They Know
If your pet enjoys a fresh food diet, keep it simple. Offer “special meals and festive treats” with ingredients they’re already familiar with.
For example, if your pet is used to chicken or beef, continue with those proteins. Limit the variety of vegetables or new ingredients—introducing a sudden change can cause digestive upset or even allergic reactions.
3. The Hybrid Diet: Consistency is Key
For pets eating both processed and natural foods, it’s important to maintain consistency. Don’t stray too far from their usual brands or food ingredients, even during the holidays.
Sudden feasts with unfamiliar ingredients or treats can lead to stomach discomfort, skin irritations, or other unwanted health issues.

And here’s how to keep your pets comfortable and safe, the HOLISTIC way:
✔ Activated Charcoal – a quarter to half of a tablet (from any pharmacy) reliably takes away gas and shrinks a bloated belly
✔ Pro-Kolin ® is a simple, over-the-counter (from pet shops and online sellers)
anti-diarrhea remedy
✔ Slippery Elm Bark powder helps an aching tummy to recover faster
✔ Fiber such as Psyllium husk – half a teaspoon with water mixed into a small tasty chicken breast meal can counteract an overdose of chemicals and
sugar from treats and food
✔ Exercise is a fun way to improve digestion, eliminate toxins faster and
oxygenize that “celebration fatigued” body

Making Special Memories with Our Furkids
We all have that one special holiday cookie or dish we look forward to every year—foods that remind us of fond memories. Just like us, our furkids deserve to create tasty memories of their own. While it’s tempting to share our holiday favourites, it’s essential choose the right treats and meals to ensure our
furkids enjoy the festivities just as much as we do.
With a little planning and mindfulness, we can all enjoy the
holiday season—without the upset tummies or itchy skin.
Let’s raise our (safe) treats in a toast to the furry members of our families
who bring us so much joy every day.
Happy, Healthy Holidays to You and Your Beloved Pets!
