Anxious Pets, Calm Solutions — Let’s Resolve Emotional Tension With Natural Remedies
While dog families may deal with “too much bark, whine and jumping and not enough zen”
cats, rabbits and guinea pigs react to stress by “freezing” shivering, shrieks or aggression.
You and your furry kids deserve peace and harmony. But life can be challenging.
From renovation noises to fireworks, thunder and rain to terribly upsetting emotional events,
we all need, at least once in a while, emotional crutches.
If there is not enough ‘Zen’ in your home, don’t worry. Here is my simple, tested and proven holistic home & travel support
Let’s start with a natural calming remedy that doesn’t cause more drama but instantly
improves everyone’s inner balance:
Rescue Remedy “to the rescue”
A mix of 5 water-based essences (NOT essential oils – we talk about them after this!) bring
the best of ‘internal zen’ to you both, furry buddies and also human companions!
Not to tout our own horn, but AsiaPaws’ very own 30ml Rescue Remedy comes without
smell, zero taste and no colouring. This ‘sprinkle water’ provides a pillar of strength and
inner balance. Our Rescue Remedy provides that comforting feeling
of “I can get through this, yes I got this”.
And here are my tested and proven ways to optimize Rescue Remedy’s
calming and also empowering effects:
1 . Sprinkle on your pet’s fur. No worries, the liquid doesn’t stain, doesn’t smell and it
is even beneficial if your pet licks it off.
2 . Also sprinkle Rescue Remedy drops into your pet’s daily drinking water! No
worries about sharing – this all-natural remedy has no adverse effects for pets who
don’t actually need the remedy.
3 . “Season your pet’s toys” and transform them into “calming tools” for your
furkids with some drops of Rescue Remedy. And don’t stop here – also add
Rescue Remedy liquid into your furkid’s food. It doesn’t matter whether your pet lives
on processed or fresh meals, our Rescue drops come without any taste or smell –
and it does ‘work wonders’.
4 . Your furry baby’s favourite resting or sleeping place become a ‘safe heaven’
with Rescue Remedy sprinkled on them! For humans, I recommend a sprinkle on
their bedroom pillows. These water-based essences provide the best, most natural
“sleeping energy” and envelope us like a reassuring hug.
5 . Last but not least – don’t waste your time counting each drop. Just squeeze the
dropper to sprinkle several drops onto each mentioned ‘location’.
Repeat as often as necessary. You will soon realize that after some ‘sprinkle
sessions’ your sensitive and stressed companion is calmer and more
reassured than ever 😊.
Essential oils
From Chamomile to Lavender, Rose Hip and proprietary mixes of essential oil sellers, I
recommend to use these powerful plant extracts near but not directly on your pet.
Here is “my secret”:
Allow your pet to choose their preferred essential oil!
And this is how it works:
1 . Choose between two to four different calming essential oils that you think
may be helpful. Remove the cap of each bottle.
2 . Arrange the bottles about 1.5 meters apart from each other, in a half circle.
This half circle should be 2 meters away from your pet.
Make sure that each bottle is positioned upright but in a slightly tilted way.
Don’t spill nay of the essential oils!
3 . Now, observe the reaction of your pet to (each of) the arranged essential oils.
Your furkid may have a clear preference.
This shows by your pet moving closer to a particular essential oil and other signs of comfort
like snuggling up nearby. Cats and rabbis may start grooming themselves nearby,
some pets simply move closer to their favourite bottle to explore it. If you notice
any of these behaviours, you got a ‘winner’ (furkid-approved essential oil).
However, if you notice that some or all of your essential oils seem to repel your pet,
put your “thinking (and shopping) hat” on and look for alternative essential oils
and oil-mixes, and try again. By ‘repel’ I mean your pet clearly avoids the essential oil.
My note of caution
Essential oils are extremely concentrated plant extracts and can be highly irritating to eyes,
mouth, airways and genitals. That’s why I never use them on
my pets’ skin and fur directly.
What I do
One or two undiluted drops to the underside of my pet’s beds, some on the leash of Ruby
(my dog) or on a cat’s bandana or cat harness.
For car rides, I clip cotton pads with calming essential oil drops onto my car’s
air-conditioning outlets. The resulting odour ideally is faint and barely detectable.
Avoid strong and overpowering whiffs because strong odours are the opposite of
calming and instead add another stress factor to sensitive furkid noses.
For anxious furry car passengers I prepare for the journey by sprinkling Rescue Remedy
on my pet’s body, into the carrier and on the carrier bedding.
And, if I feel anxious, a cup of water with drops of Rescue Remedy does the trick to
become “the calmest and strongest furkid mom possible”
